19 Things to Do When You Should Be Grading Student Essays:

1. Read the Blog
2. Check on the tutors. (They're fine.)
3. Open your favorite student's essay and read it, but don't write any comments yet.
4. Close the essay and remind yourself that you're always sorry when you read your favorite student's essay first.
5. Try to write a response to Tamara's post on censorship and responding to student writing, which was really interesting and posed an important question.
6. Check email.
7. Check regular mail.
8. Go to www.cremaster.net
9. Answer the phone. Every time it rings.
10. Put the finishing touches on that article that's due by February 28th and send it off. Yay!
11. Check on the tutors again. (Still fine.)
12. Call maintenance about the really annoying buzz coming from the heating vent in your ceiling.
13. Check email. Respond to several that are decidedly not time-sensitive.
14. Check out www.christojeanneclaude.net
15. Consult with several people who have been to see The Gates recently to determine whether it makes sense to try to go on Sunday, the last day of the exhibit, when there will surely be hoards of people and it will no doubt be ridiculously cold.
16. Meet with the tutors about the upcoming NEWCA presentation.
17. Check email. Yes, again.
18. Finish up the five letters of recommendation that are sitting, in various stages of completion, in your inbox.
19. Go home. It's late. You're hungry, you're tired, the ceiling buzz has left you with a headache and it really wouldn't be fair to try to grade any essays in this state of mind.

From Choice Theory in the Classroom:

"The choice theory explanation of behavior is that we always choose to do what is most satisfying to us at the time. If what we choose to do is consistently satisfying, we will choose it with less and less deliberation, but even if it is as quick as a flash, it is an action, not an automatic reaction. Only machines react automatically. The bell did not make the dog salivate any more than terrorism and counterterrorism (overwhelming "stimuli" if you believe in stimuli) will bring peace to the Middle East" (Glasser 21).

The first part of Glasser's comments I will tentatively buy into (that we TEND to do what is most satisfying --- but not that we ALWAYS do that. If that were true, I'd be having a lot more fun.) The second part seems off the wall. What does he mean "IF you believe in stimuli?" And I don't get the salivating dog/Middle East analogy.

Well, anyway, it's only fair to play along and offer MY list of avoidance behaviors:

1) Mentally imitate Scarlett O'Hara's "I think about that tomorrow."
2) Play with Picasa and Hello (photo manipulation and distribution software)
3) Post to my own blog.
4) Post to a stranger in Michigan's blog (since he's been posting generously to mine)
5) Study Tarot cards.
6) Read Choice Theory in the Classroom
7) Send consultation summaries to instructors.
8) Move piles of papers that need to be graded to the next place they will sit for a few days.
9) Draw stick people versions of writing studio encounters
10)Look at the CD for Writing About Literature

And here are a few more:

--Move things from one pile in my office to another pile in my office

--Decide that I have to have that cup of coffee or coke NOW

--Clean the bathroom (if working at home)

--Rearrange the piles on my desk (if at the office)

--Read The Writing Center Journal!
